Clash between two castes near Sayalkudi

A clash between some youths from two castes resulted in physical attacks in which seven people, including two women, sustained multiple injuries on Saturday evening.

Police said that after the polling, which ended on April 19 evening, two groups from Kadugu Sandhai Chatram village near Sayalkudi had an altercation. The young people were talking to some women about whether they had voted for the candidate they had in mind.

The issue snowballed again on Saturday evening as a larger number of young people arrived there and made inquiries about who they were voting for. Suddenly the gang, who had come on bicycles, took out long aruvals and attacked the people.

In the melee, two women, identified as Selvi (45) and Vellathai (56), were seriously injured. Manikandan (23), Mukesh Kannan (21), Irullaya (48) and Arvind (19) also suffered multiple injuries.

The villagers called the ambulance service ‘108’, which rushed the injured to Kadaladi Government Hospital for first aid and then referred them to Ramanathapuram Government Medical College and Hospital.

Meanwhile, the family members from Chatram village surrendered to a roadblock on East Coast Road on Saturday evening, demanding police to arrest the attackers.

As they refused to disperse, traffic piled up on the stretch. DSP Sudhir Lal and a team of officers held talks and assured them of action after which the people dropped the agitation.

The police have seized a case and are looking for the suspects. Pickets were placed in the area to ensure that no untoward incidents took place.
