Ilkeston man arrested after police officer was injured and negotiators called to incident

A man was arrested by police last night (Saturday, April 20) following an incident in Cotmanhay. Derbyshire Police say they were called to the house in Hartington Place just after 7.40pm to execute a warrant under section 135 of the Mental Health Act.

Section 135 of the Mental Health Act allows police to enter a person’s home and take or keep them in a place of safety so that a mental health assessment can be carried out. During the incident, a police officer was injured and taken to hospital.

The official has since been fired. A police spokesperson said: “Due to the risks posed by the man, support was provided by specialist police units, police negotiators and the National Police Air Service.

“The man was the only person at the address and no other people were involved in the incident. The man was safely apprehended just before 4.15am.”

The man was arrested in connection with the incident and taken into police custody, where he remains this morning. There is a police scene on site so the investigation can continue.
