Massive avalanche in Manaslu, warnings issued for settlements near Budhigandaki River

KATHMANDU, APRIL 21

A massive avalanche occurred in the iconic Manaslu Mountain in Samagaun of Chumanubri Rural Municipality-1 in northern Gorkha this morning, triggering urgent warnings for local residents.

The avalanche, which occurred around 9am this morning, descended near Birendra Lake at the foot of the mountain, causing the lake to swell and overflow into the Budhigandaki River below.

Authorities have raised the alarm about the possibility of flooding in the Budhigandaki, highlighting the significant risk to settlements downstream.

A police team was immediately sent to the site following reports of the avalanche, as confirmed by Superintendent of Police Basudev Pathak, head of the Gorkha District Police Station of the Rastriya Samachar Samiti. Initial assessments indicate there is no immediate threat of further damage despite increased water levels damaging a wooden bridge over the river, SP Pathak added.

At 8,163 meters, Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world.
