‘Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ debuts 20 minutes of epic footage in Annecy, introducing a headstrong Princess Héra of Rohan

Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema gave a roughly 20-minute preview of the upcoming anime film “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” to thunderous applause during Tuesday’s packed presentation at the Annecy Animation Festival.

Director Kenji Kamiyana said he was inspired not only by JRR Tolkien’s books “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” but also by the films of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, who were confirmed as executive producers during the session from the movie.

The session included filmmakers Kamiyama (whose credits include the TV series “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” and “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex”) in conversation with Andy Serkis.

The new story takes place nearly 200 years before Blibo Baggins comes into contact with the Ring of Power and introduces key characters including Princess Héra of Rohan (Gaia Wise) and King Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox).
